Stand at the edge of the Marinship district on a morning when the light off the water is doing something impossible, and you begin to understand where this painting comes from. For close to forty years, Leslie Allen has watched the geometry of that waterfront — its cranes, its shadows, its memory of the workers who built it — seep into her canvases almost without her asking. Here, the cream and ash of the ground recalls the fog-bleached walls of the old shipyard buildings, while the arching red forms at left feel like the echo of welded steel, still warm. But paintings, like cello sonatas, are not only about place — they are about time moving through a person. The loose, luminous heart-shape at centre-lower feels like an exhale, a moment of tenderness within the surrounding energy. The blue form at upper centre leans in like a listener; the geometric fragments at upper right are notes not yet resolved. Allen has spoken of painting and music as deeply entwined, and here you can almost hear the interval — the held breath between one phrase and the next. To spend time with this work is to enter a conversation that has been going on for decades: between the Bay and the studio, between structure and freedom, between the worker's Sausalito and the painter's Sausalito. It asks nothing of you except that you stay a little longer than you planned.
