She has been in the studio all day. The figure at the center of this painting doesn't so much stand as accumulate — built from the detritus of a working life: fragments of canvas, the geometry of Marinship's industrial bones, a raised glass, a mark that might be a word or might be a melody. Leslie Allen has spent close to forty years painting in the waterfront district where ships were once built, and something of that constructive labor lives in every passage of this canvas. The face is knowing, slightly amused, carrying the quiet authority of someone who has seen the tide come in and go out many times from a studio window. Around the figure, objects orbit like memories — a pear, a plate, brushes upright in a jar, a cloud dripping white paint from the upper right like a private joke. Text fragments ghost through the lower register, half-word, half-gesture, the kind of mark Allen makes when the painting starts to speak back. This is a painting about being present in one's own creative life. It holds the noise and the stillness of the artist's world in careful balance — figurative enough to anchor you, abstract enough to set you adrift. It is, in the best sense, a self-portrait of a practice.
