There is a particular light that settles over San Francisco Bay in the late afternoon — not the famous Golden Gate gold, but something quieter and more complicated: a warm haze that blurs the line between water, mud flat, and sky until the whole estuary becomes one breathing, luminous field. Leslie Allen has spent close to forty years watching that light from her studio in the old Marinship district, and this painting feels like a memory of it — not a record, but a resonance. The earth tones in the lower register carry the weight of the Rio Grande country where she grew up, the sandy warmth of El Paso and the high desert. But the blues and greens that push through are entirely Sausalito — the colour of the bay seen through a studio window, the colour of tide coming in over a working waterfront. The red marks that arc and loop across the upper field feel like music notation, like the bow-strokes of the cello she studies and plays in the College of Marin Symphony; they are the painting's pulse, its tempo marking. The small boat sketched in wire-thin line at the lower right is an homage — to the shipwrights and welders and painters who built this place during the war years, whose geometry still lives in the bones of the Marinship buildings around her studio. It asks you to remember that all this luminous abstraction is also a place, a history, and a home.
